BBC Radio 1 Podcast

  • What are the different responsibilities of presenters and producers?
Will foster- ( Producer ) Making sure that they are all the most prepared. Seeing if there is a caller sounds good and making sure that they know what they need to know when on the show.
Fiona Hanlon- ( Assistant producer ) - Eyes on the equipment. To brief the guests on what to do and what not to do. Figuring out what the gaps are in the show, how to fill them and make it the best experience possible for everyone (the team and the views).
Nick Grimshaw- ( Presenter ) - Nick is on air from 6:30 till 10:00 which can be stressful so he has to try and keep the audience listening while being calm. He also has to be able to change the show.

  • What preparation that goes into each programme?
Alarm at 4:00am, in work by 5:00am . on air by 6:30am and then off air by 10:00. But they do not get to go home when they finish the show because they need to prepare for the next show. They create a script but it is very flexible. When they have guests who are quite large and famous then they usually have a sit down talking about whats gonna happen. But still have to make sure that it will be entertaining but then still professional. For example if you only have time to ask 10 questions then you ask the best 10 questions that you can think of but still funny and exciting. They also have to brief the guests before they go on air. Such as not to swear, not to mention these certain brands, not to bring up certain topics because this could not be suitable or could not be the best thing to have the listens hear such topics which are thought to be sensitive to any viewers. Will and Fiona also have a sit down talking what will be going on the show the day before and then also another one when they meet in the studio in the morning.

  • What's most challenging and most enjoyable about working on the show?
Having to get guests on the show because they might not be very open and may be very hard to talk to. This is hard because this would then shorten the amount of time that they are on the show for which leads to having to think of more things to do instead of this interview. As well as this they have to keep the audience interested the entire time of the show but they cannot keep them on the show the whole time because people who listen in the morning have to go to work or to school and this can effect the numbers quite badly. But for the time that they are listening is when Radio 1 get their highest numbers they have to do their best to keep them listening.

  • What are the team dynamics like?
Everyone has to get along and understadn each other, good to have new members of the team like producers as the bring in new ideas nobody has thought of before. cant be hostile and has to have a good vibe for it to succeed. Trust is absolutley key/ Whatsapp group to remember stories they well talk about.

  • How can you break into radio?
Exposing yourself to radio. seeing how it works, student radio communication work and skills. directly appproaching people already in the industry and asking them about things. Just keep at it if you get rejected at furst by email/ Get ourself exposed and get yourself out there. Get some experience. figure out what you like about presenters on the radio and bring that into your work.
